Rough Sleepers in Harrogate this Winter

At this time of year we are often asked about the support available for rough sleepers in Harrogate. We are concerned that people may be sleeping out at any time of year and especially during prolonged spells of severe weather.

In addition to our hostel facilities, we have a facility which is called No Second Night Out. This is a rough sleeper scheme which provides temporary beds as an alternative to sleeping out. During the winter months we are generally running at maximum occupancy in No Second Night Out, as well as supporting people in whatever way we can overnight as a doorstep service with the provision of sleeping bags, warm clothing and warm snacks.

The actual number of people who are currently roofless in Harrogate is very low, and for those who are unwilling to come indoors we support them through our day service, Springboard, which provides hot lunches, showers, laundry facilities and clothes store, as well as advice and emotional support.

We would like to reassure people that those seen begging are often not homeless, and through Springboard and some church groups there is substantial help to meet their essential needs such as food, clothing, washing facilities.

If you see someone sleeping rough or are concerned for someone who appears vulnerable and homeless, please contact our hostel on Bower Street so that we can respond appropriately and check on their welfare. Contact us on 01423 566900.
